20.2.2 Request Cards or Fobs for Proximity Access
Policy Statement
A contactless device such as a proximity card or key fob uses an embedded circuit and antenna to relay access information when it is near—in proximity—to a reader. No swiping needed. All i-cards issued since December 2020 use HID Seos cardstock, which comes with built-in proximity capabilities. Key fobs and other proximity devices used in the University of Illinois System must be ordered from i-card Programs.
Three types of contactless devices are available:
- Individual i-cards and IDs, which are associated with one person. If you need access to a proximity-enabled reader and you have an i-card that was issued prior to December 2020, you may exchange your i-card for a proximity-capable one.
- Department cards
- Department key fobs
Procedure
Visit your ID Center in Chicago, Springfield , or Urbana to get an individual ID or department card, or to exchange your i-card for a proximity-capable one.
To request key fobs for proximity access, or to learn more about upgrading your proximity readers:
- Contact the i-card Help Desk (217-265-6464 or icardhelp@uillinois.edu). They will work with you to determine which type of proximity device or reader will best meet your needs.
